What is WHOIS (and RDAP)?

WHOIS is the long-standing protocol that returns information about a domain's registration — who registered it, when, with which registrar, and the technical contacts behind it. Behind the scenes we use RDAP, the modern HTTPS/JSON replacement for classic port-43 WHOIS. RDAP returns the same data — registrar, registration and expiry dates, nameservers, EPP status codes, DNSSEC signing — but in a typed, standardised format and over a TLS-encrypted channel.

Domain research and due diligence

Before buying a domain or entering a partnership, the WHOIS record tells you how old the domain is, which registrar holds it and when it expires — three signals that quickly weed out throw-away domains.

Trademark protection

Brand owners use WHOIS to track look-alike registrations, monitor new ones that target their brand, and gather evidence for takedown notices and UDRP cases.

Technical troubleshooting

Pull the authoritative nameservers in one query, confirm a domain isn't on registry hold, and reach the registrar's published abuse contact when something is misbehaving.

Security and fraud investigation

Phishing and malware campaigns leave WHOIS fingerprints — registration age, registrar IANA ID, nameserver pattern. Use those signals to triage indicators of compromise.

Normalised domain name. The tool auto-strips http(s)://, www. and trailing slashes so paste-from-URL still works.
Registrar
The ICANN-accredited registrar that holds the registration — e.g. GoDaddy, Namecheap, Gandi, Cloudflare Registrar.
Registrar IANA ID
Unique registrar number assigned by IANA — handy for automated workflows and when registrar branding changes.
Created
When the domain was first registered. Useful as an age signal — older domains tend to have more established authority and trust.
Expires & Expires in
Renewal date plus a human-friendly countdown. After the expiry date the domain enters a registrar-controlled grace period before becoming available again.
Last update
Most recent WHOIS-side change — typically a registrar transfer, nameserver change or contact update.
Domain status
One or more EPP status codes the registry has set on the domain — for example clientTransferProhibited (registrar-lock against unauthorised transfers), serverHold (domain not resolving, often non-payment or legal), redemptionPeriod (expired, still restorable for a fee), or pendingDelete (about to be released).
Nameservers
The authoritative DNS servers configured for the domain — where every external DNS resolver goes for the canonical records.
DNSSEC
Whether the registry signs the delegation — Signed means there's a chain of trust between the TLD and the domain's keys, Unsigned means no DS records are published.
Reseller
When the registrar sold through a reseller, this shows the reseller brand. Common with Namecheap-style platforms and large hosting providers.
Registrant
Registered organisation, when the WHOIS record is not redacted. GDPR and similar laws cause most personal registrations to be hidden behind a privacy proxy — but corporate registrations are still routinely public.
Abuse contact & phone
Published abuse-reporting channel for the registrar. Required to be public under ICANN policy, even when the registrant is redacted.
Registrar URL
Public homepage of the registrar — convenient when you need to look up a transfer authorisation form or a registrar's terms.

How our service works

  1. Input cleanup. URLs, schemes, www. and trailing paths are stripped so a paste from the address bar still resolves cleanly.
  2. RDAP bootstrap. We hit rdap.org, which routes the query to the authoritative RDAP server for the right TLD — gTLDs and most modern ccTLDs are supported.
  3. Structured parsing. The JSON response is walked field by field: events, entities, vCard, secureDNS and EPP status codes are turned into the columns you see in the table.
  4. Bulk mode. Submit up to 100 domains at once — each one runs through the same pipeline and lands in the results table side by side.

Privacy & the post-GDPR WHOIS

Since GDPR landed in 2018, ICANN-accredited registrars redact personal contact details from public WHOIS by default. You'll still get the registrar, dates, status codes, nameservers, DNSSEC, registrar IANA ID and abuse contact — those are not redacted — but the registrant identity is typically replaced with a privacy-service placeholder. Country-code TLDs each set their own policy; some publish everything, others publish almost nothing.

Supported domain extensions

Any TLD that publishes an RDAP server through the IANA bootstrap registry — that means:

  • Generic TLDs — .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .name, and every new gTLD that went live after 2014.
  • Country-code TLDs — .uk, .de, .fr, .cz, .sk, .nl, .ca, .au, .jp, .us and most other RDAP-enabled ccTLDs.
  • New gTLDs — .app, .dev, .blog, .shop, .tech, .online, .site, .io and many more.

Restricted TLDs such as .gov, .edu, .mil and a handful of ccTLDs don't publish an RDAP endpoint — for those we return whatever the bootstrap returns, which is usually a 404 or 501.

Best practices

For domain owners

  • Keep your registrar account contact info current — that's where renewal and transfer notices go.
  • Lock your domain with clientTransferProhibited and enable two-factor auth at the registrar.
  • Renew early — registrar grace periods exist, but recovery during redemptionPeriod usually costs 10× the renewal fee.

For researchers

  • Cross-reference WHOIS with current DNS (use the DNS tool) — registrations and authoritative DNS sometimes drift.
  • Privacy-proxied registrations still leak signals: registrar choice, registration date and nameserver pattern.
  • Treat WHOIS as one input among many — corroborate before acting on the data.

WHOIS vs DNS

WHOIS tells you who owns the domain and how it was registered; DNS tells you what the domain currently resolves to. The two answer different questions and often live in different systems — a domain can be parked at one registrar while pointing its DNS at an entirely separate hosting provider. Limitations

  • Privacy/proxy services obscure registrant identity on most consumer registrations.
  • WHOIS data isn't real-time — a transfer or renewal may take minutes to surface.
  • Historical ownership isn't available — we only return the current snapshot.
  • A handful of ccTLDs and special-use TLDs have no RDAP server; those queries fail.
  • WHOIS data must not be used for marketing, spam or other prohibited purposes.
